About the cat's tongue did you know that it has tiny, backward-facing barbs (papillae) and that's why, when they lick our sensitive skin it creates that sandpaper sensation. These papillae serve different purposes. They help the cat clean its fur. It's like a tiny brush, it also helps to remove the dirt. All the hair and dirt end up in the cat's tongue which in the end will be swallowed by the cat. That's how your fury friend may end up with lots of hairballs. To avoid the discomfort, you can help your cat by grooming him/her frequently.
